Two textbook representations of second language acquisition and Universal Grammar : " Access " versus " constraint " Author : Margaret Thomas

چکیده
Two textbooks written by Lydia White, one published in 1989 and the other in 2003, introduce generative research on second language acquisition and evaluate existing proposals about the role of Universal Grammar. Comparison of the two texts provides an opportunity to examine some of the conventions the field uses in representing itself to a novice readership. It also brings to light certain aspects of the field’s development during a 14-year interval. A point of particular interest is that this interval spans a shift in the language commonly used to pose questions about the relationship of Universal Grammar to second language acquisition, from the metaphor of “access” to the metaphor of “constraint.” Post-print version of an article published in Second Language Research 19(4): 359-376. doi:10.1191/0267658303sr229oa

Universal Grammar and Chaos/Complexity Theory: Where Do They Meet And Where Do They Cross?
Abstract The present study begins by sketching "Chaos/Complexity Theory" (C/CT) and its applica-tion to the nature of language and language acquisition. Then, the theory of "Universal Grammar" (UG) is explicated with an eye to C/CT. Firstly, it is revealed that CCT may or may not be allied with a theory of language acquisition that takes UG as the initial state of language acquisition for ...

متن کاملThe Effect of Multimedia-Based Instruction on Improving Iranian EFL Learners’ Grammar Knowledge and their Attitudes
Applying technologies has recently caused language education to undertake influential modifications. Hence, this study tried to investigate the impact of using technology in form of multimedia on improving grammar knowledge of Iranian high school students and also examined their attitudes toward multimedia-based mode of instruction. To do so, three intact classes of lower intermediate students ...
متن کاملUniversal Grammar and L 2 acquisition of reflexive binding : Some learners acquire a non - L 1 / non - Target system
Research investigating the acquisition of English reflexives by second language learners whose native language instantiates long-distance binding (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Korean) has shown that some of these learners are able to acquire local binding (Hirakawa 1990; Thomas 1989, 1991a; Eckman 1994; Lakshmanan and Teranishi 1994). This finding has been interpreted as evidence that second langua...
متن کاملPragmatic Representations in Iranian High School English Textbooks
Owing to the growing interest in communicative, cultural and pragmatic aspects of second language learning in recent years, the present study tried to investigate representations of pragmatic aspects of English as a foreign language in Iranian high school textbooks. Using Halliday’s (1978), and Searle’s (1976) models, different language functions and speech acts were specifically determined and...
